"How much is dry cleaning?" doesn't have one answer — the same shirt can cost differently depending on fabric, finish, and whether the quote you were given actually includes tax. Here's what determines the price, and how to compare quotes properly.
What actually determines the price
Dry cleaning pricing isn't arbitrary — a handful of factors explain most of the variation you'll see between providers:
- Fabric type: silk, wool, and delicate blends need gentler (and often costlier) solvents and handling than cotton or polyester.
- Garment complexity: a plain shirt is quick to process; a heavily embellished lehenga or sherwani with sequins, zari work, or multiple layers takes far more careful handling.
- Stain treatment: garments needing extra stain work beyond a standard clean typically cost more, since they need individual attention rather than batch processing.
- Urgency: standard turnaround is usually cheaper than express or same-day requests, since express work has to be prioritised ahead of the regular queue.
GST and why two quotes can look so different
Dry cleaning services in India fall under SAC Code 9997, which means GST applies. A quote that looks cheaper at first glance may simply be excluding tax, with the real amount only appearing on your final bill. When comparing providers, always check whether the price quoted is GST-inclusive — otherwise you're not comparing like for like. How pricing is structured
Most dry cleaners (DomTom included) price by category rather than a flat per-item rate: men's wear, women's wear, household items (curtains, blankets, carpets), and kids' wear each have their own price grid, since garment complexity varies a lot within each group. Pickup fees are usually tiered by order value too — at DomTom, orders above ₹400 carry a ₹15 pickup and delivery fee, while orders below ₹400 carry ₹40.
